She builds the little world herself — sand, moss, blossom tree,
castle, unicorns — then puts the cork lid on, picks a colour on the remote, and it
glows on her bedside table every night after.

A craft that doesn't go in the bin
Most craft kits get made once and thrown out. This one turns into a night light she
actually keeps. That is the whole idea — an afternoon of making, then months of it
glowing in the corner of her room.
What she builds
Layers of coloured sand first, then the scene on top: a pink castle, a cherry
blossom tree, a rainbow, mushrooms on stems, balloons, little plants, coloured moss and
a scatter of acrylic gems. Three unicorns go in last — a large winged one, a
little one, and a flying one. There is no single right way to arrange it, which is the
point.
Then it lights up
| 12 colours |
Pick any colour on the remote, or warm white for a softer bedtime glow. |
| Fade & flash modes |
Slow colour fade, or two flashing modes if she wants it livelier. |
| 30 and 60 minute timers |
Set it at bedtime and it turns itself off. No one has to creep in later. |
| Remote control |
Everything is on the handset, so she can change it from bed. |
| Brightness control |
Plus and minus on the remote, so it can be very dim indeed. |
How it goes together
-
Pour the sand. Layer the colours however she likes — blue, purple and pink all come in the box.
-
Build the scene. Press the tree, castle, mushrooms and plants into the sand, then add the moss and gems.
-
Place the unicorns. This is the part she will rearrange about forty times.
-
Light it up. The LED puck sits under the cork lid. Cork on, lights on, done.

Before you buy — age and safety
-
Ages 5 and over. The kit contains small parts and loose beads, so it is not suitable for younger children or for anyone still mouthing things.
-
The jar is glass. Build it on a table, not on a hard floor, and keep it somewhere it will not get knocked off.
-
Batteries. The light and remote are battery powered. Keep batteries and the remote out of reach of small children, and make sure the battery compartments stay closed — a swallowed button battery is a medical emergency. If you ever suspect one has been swallowed, ring the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 immediately.
- Adult help is handy for the first build, mostly for steadying the jar.
Common questions
What age is it really for?
The box says 5 and up, and that is about right. A five or six year old will want a hand steadying the jar; by seven or eight they will do the whole thing themselves and then redo it.
Can it be taken apart and rebuilt?
Yes. Everything simply sits in the sand, so she can tip it out and start again whenever she likes.
Is it a real terrarium with living plants?
No, the plants and moss are decorative, so there is nothing to water and nothing to die. That is deliberate — it keeps looking right months later.
Does the light need to be plugged in?
No. The LED puck is battery powered and sits under the cork lid, so there is no cord anywhere near the bed.
How big is it?
The jar is roughly 14cm tall and 13cm across — a proper bedside-table size, not a tiny trinket.
Is it a good birthday present?
It is one of the better ones in this price range, because it is two gifts in one: the afternoon of making it, then the night light she keeps.
