Thames & Kosmos
This planetarium projector turns a bedroom into a star theatre. It is two projectors in one: a rotating star-map dome that casts astronomically accurate star maps, with both northern and southern hemisphere maps included, and a second projector for space images of the eight planets, rockets and satellites, nebulae and galaxies. A nightlight mode switches it off after 15, 30 or 60 minutes.
One side is a rotating star-map dome. The other projects space images. Switch between a real night sky and a tour of the solar system.
Star maps for both the northern and southern hemispheres come in the box, so Australian kids can find the Southern Cross on their own ceiling.
The star-map dome projects accurate maps of the stars, not a random scatter of dots, so it is a genuine learning tool.
Image discs show all eight planets, eight human-made space objects like rockets and satellites, and eight extragalactic phenomena like nebulae and galaxies.
Nightlight mode turns the projector off automatically after 15, 30 or 60 minutes, so it can lull a child to sleep without running all night.
The compact design sits on a flat surface or hangs on a wall.
It uses long-lasting LED lights.
A colour educational poster and an instruction sheet come with it, to match what is on the ceiling to what is in the sky.
It sparks questions about space every night, not just on the day it is unwrapped.
