Science and Nature
Leonardo da Vinci sketched a human-powered flying machine in the late 15th century. This wooden kit lets you build a scaled model of it from his Codex Atlanticus drawings, with a bevel gear that makes the wings flap and the pilot's arms and legs move. All the pieces are pre-cut and pre-drilled. Finished, it measures 39 x 17cm and looks wonderful on a desk or shelf.
The model is based on da Vinci's own drawings of the Ornithopter, one of his most famous designs.
A bevel gear turns the handle into flapping wings, and the pilot's arms and legs move with them.
Every wooden piece is pre-cut and pre-drilled. All the components are in the box.
Building it shows how gears turn one motion into another. It is a hands-on history and engineering lesson in one.
Finished, it is about 39 x 17 x 6cm in natural wood, and looks just as good on an adult's desk as a child's shelf.
A good project for curious kids with a parent, or for an adult who likes to build things.
Da Vinci never built his flying machine. Building the model is the closest most of us will get to seeing his idea move.
Finished, it suits a study, office or bookshelf. It is a good gift for engineers, history lovers and model makers.
