Jacaru Australia

The one everybody else at the park wishes they'd brought.

At 195 by 145 centimetres this is a picnic blanket you lay down to claim territory. Four adults, a spread of food and room to stretch out — or two people and an afternoon of doing absolutely nothing. The outer is Jacaru's oilskin: 100% cotton, treated with oil and pigment so water beads off it instead of soaking through to you. The side you actually sit on is red tartan cotton flannelette, which is the bit that turns a blanket into a nap.

Big enough to actually spread out on

Most picnic rugs are sized for one person and a sandwich. 195 x 145cm is close to a king-size bedspread. It is the size you want for a music festival, an outdoor cinema, carols in the park, or any event where arriving early and claiming ground is half the battle.

Oilskin on the outside, so the ground stays the ground

Jacaru has built oilskin gear in Australia for decades and this is the same fabric treatment used on their coats. Damp grass, sand and the odd spilled drink stay on the outside. It is water resistant rather than waterproof, which is the honest description — it handles dew, damp lawn and light rain, not sitting in a puddle.

Flannelette lining you will not want to get off

The underside is red tartan cotton flannelette. Soft, warm, and the reason this gets used for bonfire nights and winter sport sidelines as much as summer picnics.

Rolls up and buckles shut

It folds down and secures with a leather-look strap and brass-tone buckle, with a carry handle so it travels over a shoulder rather than under an arm.

100% cotton, so it breathes

Natural fibre throughout. It does not have the clammy plastic feel of a PVC-backed rug, and it does not crackle when you fold it.

A note on colour

Because of the way oilskin takes the oil and pigment, the natural shade varies between lighter and darker brown from piece to piece. That variation is characteristic of the fabric rather than a fault. The tartan lining is consistent.

Questions people ask

How many people does it fit?

Comfortably four adults sitting, or two lying down with room for food between you. It is roughly the footprint of a king-size bedspread.

Is it waterproof or water resistant?

Water resistant. The oilskin outer sheds dew, damp grass and light rain. It is not designed to sit in standing water.

Which side goes down?

The oilskin side faces the ground. The red tartan flannelette is the side you sit on.

Can I machine wash it?

No. Oilskin should be spot cleaned with a damp cloth and air dried flat. Machine washing strips the oil treatment that makes it water resistant.

How is the colour going to look?

Natural oilskin varies between light and dark brown between pieces. Yours may be a little lighter or darker than the photographs.

What is the difference between this and the standard 8003?

This is the XL at 195 x 145cm. The standard 8003 is 125 x 145cm. Same fabric, same lining, same construction.
