Using it safely

  • The chip chamber gets hot in use. Let it cool before emptying or cleaning.
  • Use on a heat-safe surface, away from anything that can catch.
  • Smoke in a ventilated room. It makes a lot more smoke than people expect the first time.
  • Keep it away from children, and never leave it running unattended.
  • Use food-grade smoking chips only. Never treated, painted or resinous timber.

Common questions

Does it come with a dome or cover?
No. This set is the gun, the chips and the tools. You can smoke a glass by covering it with a coaster or a saucer, or use any bowl or cloche you already own. If you want a dome included, see our dish cover set instead.
Is it a good gift?
It is the better of our two for gifting — it arrives in a printed box with four sealed chip tins, so there is something to open rather than a bare appliance.
Do I need to buy anything else to use it?
No. Wood chips are included to get you started, and the gun runs on its own rechargeable battery. Replacement chips are inexpensive and widely available when you run out.
What can I smoke with it?
Cocktails and whisky, cheese, cured meats, butter, salmon, cream, steak, even a finished plate before it goes out. Anything you can cover for thirty seconds will take the flavour.
Does it actually cook anything?
No, it is a cold smoker. It adds aroma and flavour without heating the food, which is why it works on drinks and delicate things like sashimi.
Is there a flame?
The chips smoulder rather than burn with an open flame, but they do get hot. Use it on a heat-safe surface and never leave it running unattended.
How long does the smoke take?
Ten to thirty seconds under a cover is usually plenty. Leave it longer for a heavier, more barbecue-like flavour.
